Celebrating Sarah! Celebrating Independence!

Independence Day encourages us all to pause and reflect on the importance of individual freedom and independence. At DSC, we support people in living rich and meaningful lives as they strive to reach their personal and professional goals and dreams.

We would like to introduce you to Sarah. Sarah has been a part of the DSC family for almost 30 years! She is very proud of the life she has created.

When asked what independence means to her, Sarah said, “The activities I do through DSC help me feel independent, because I have a lot of choices; I get to choose what I want to do. I love going places, doing outdoor activities, and spending time with other people.”

Sarah has been a part of the DSC family for nearly 30 years. For more than half of those years, she's lived in a DSC group home. Through DSC's Supported Employment program, Sarah has continued to work in the community and is very proud of the life she has created.

Those who have worked alongside Sarah, like Annette Becherer, Director of Employment Services, have noticed her ambition. “Sarah is such a great example of someone who enjoys life to the fullest. She chooses to spend her days involved in a wide variety of activities, including art, sports, volunteering, and work. She brings enthusiasm to each and looks forward to trying new things. Her enthusiasm is contagious, adding to everyone’s enjoyment.”

Sarah just competed in the Special Olympics Summer Games for the 11th time, and she won a silver medal in the 100 meters! Sarah also loves to volunteer, travel, and stay active. Lacey Tedford, DSC Direct Support Professional said, “Sarah likes to learn new things and encourages others to try new things. She is a great gardener. She plants, tends to, and harvests the raised garden beds at her home. She also volunteers to weed around the home.”

As DSC continues our efforts to impact more lives like Sarah’s, we invite you to partner with us to promote independence and support our mission.

We are grateful for your support!
